#StoryADayMay, comfort zone, Flash Fiction, writing surprises

Day 12 – and all goes well.

In between teaching my writing course, rehearsing Alice, two editing jobs, and a dozen other things of a more practical nature, I’m happy to say that I’ve managed my twelfth story in a row, last night… Continue reading →

comfort zone, Flash Fiction, obsessions, Tom O'Brien, writing craft

Very brief. Flash excursions, in fact…

Because yes: after more than a year, I’m still tinkering away with flash fiction. Or perhaps, more accurately, I’m still struggling with it. I want to write flash fiction. I want to do it well. I try again and again (although perhaps not quite as much as I should), and still find my work wanting. And so I tinker on, and read flashes, and read craft books, and take courses, and try again, and spring my attempts on innocent readers. Continue reading →

newyearresA few days ago, I posted on my Italian blog a small list of New Year’s resolutions – although I prefer to think in terms of intentions, because for me it works better that way. The usual things, mostly – sending my novel Out There, writing a couple of plays I have in the workings, reorganizing my house in a serious way, and writing something outside of my comfort zone… Continue reading →

comfort zone, mentor, writing

MentorI must say that I greatly miss my mentor.

He was one of Italy’s great paediatricians, and also a philosopher and the author of a few groundbreaking books about medical ethics. Hardly the right mentor for a historical novelist and playwright, one might think – except that he also was deeply and passionately knowledgeable about opera, literature, theatre, cinema – and the greatest and most enlightened president the Accademia Nazionale Virgiliana ever had. Quite the Renaissance man – and a wonderful teacher and mentor to boot… Continue reading →
