Speaking of diversity…

diversity policy, Globe theatre

Is this going to be a little awkward? I don’t know – but let us try. I’ve been discussing the new course at the Globe quite a bit, this past week, and one of the things that turned up more than once is the diversity policy, and…

Confession: I’m never entirely comfortable with the notion of diversity policies. “Which is a little odd,” I’ve been told. “As a woman, you should know how hard it is at times.” And yes, I do know. Not because of my stage experiences, I must say: I’ve been very lucky in that, and in fact, I think I’ve worked with more women than men, both as directors and artistic directors – and not because of any diversity policy. Only once have I been told – and this during an online workshop with an American instructor – that, as a woman playwright, I should write female characters. It was slightly disconcerting, but on the whole my experience in the theatre allows me to consider that as the odd bizarre incident. Continue reading →

Beatriz Romilly, Globe theatre, Matthew Dunster, Mexican Revolution, Much Ado About Nothing, shakespeare

So, I was at the Globe for Matthew Dunster’s “Mexican” production of Much Ado About Nothing, and loved it.

Let’s begin with the time-travel quality of just entering the place, climbing up the wooden stairs (we opted for the gallery benches – with cushions), watching from above the groundlings standing in the pit… Oh, the thrill of it!

And then the play itself: lively, colourful, full of song and music, with touches of that kind of melancholy, angry lust for love and life that goes with wartime – given that the setting is the Mexican Revolution… Continue reading →

1950, educational film, Elizabethan era, Globe theatre, Huntley Archives, the Faerie Queene

GlobeWhile looking for something else entirely, I stumbled across this little 1950 British film. It’s clearly an educational thing, devised to give the viewer a taste of the Elizabethan era, and especially of the theatre.

Look at the model reconstruction of the Globe, to see how they imagined the old playhouse long before Sam Wanamaker crossed the Pond with his visions, and even longer before the remains of the Rose were excavated, and all they had to go about were drawings and speculation. Continue reading →

Direction, Globe theatre, Staging It

GlobeLogoDid you ever want to direct a Shakespeare play? Perhaps at the Globe?

Well, now you can – or, if not a complete play, at least a scene or three, with The Globe’s Staging it.

From the website:

Staging It is a brand new interactive film maker. It allows you to understand Shakespeare’s text from a director’s point of view and virtually stage a scene at the Globe theatre.

Actors are filmed performing a moment of a play on the Globe stage. Each line of their speech is shot four times, each time performed in different ways (happy, flirtatious, defensive, etc.) Watch each of the clips and add your choice to a dynamic storyboard to build up a final scene.

Besides being great fun, it can be quite a revelation to play around and see how moods and nuances can be combined together, and how changing the rendition of a single line can give an entirely different spin to a whole scene.

If nothing else, Staging It casts an interesting light on the director’s role and work with the text and actors. A well-thought, clever little game to play.

Globe Player, Globe theatre, shakespeare

GPDid you know you can now view Globe productions on demand on the Globe Player?

You can choose your play, read an introduction and a cast list, watch a preview and browse viewers’ comments. If you like what you see, you can either rent or buy the video for a very reasonable charge – or even send it as a gift, which is a nice thought for this time of the year.

You can also choose from a wide selection of foreign productions: Shakespeare in a rainbow of languages, under Globe To Globe.

And there is some free content as well, such as Muse of Fire, a series of interviews with Shakespearean actors and directors, about the relevance of the Bard in today’s world. And the bizarre but fascinating Sonnet Project NYC, a collection of small movies – one for each sonnet, filmed in New York to combine Shakespeare’s works with the city’s “urban poetry”.

A treasure trove for all of us who live far, far, far away from London and its theatres.
