Bernard Malamud, notebooks, quotes, Stories

Years ago – possibly a dozen – I wrote down a quote that said “Stories, stories, stories – to me there is nothing else but stories.” Or something to that effect. I’m quoting from memory, and I’m not sure about the details – but you get the gist. I like the notion very much, and rather share it, and more than once, through the years, I’ve tried to locate the source – but, believe it or not, even the all-encompassing Web was no help… Continue reading →

notebooks, Paperblanks, Santa Lucia, traveler's notebook

It’s Santa Lucia, over here – the gift bringer. One of these days I’ll tell you about the various forms the legend and the tradition take, but not today. Today – as you may have gathered by the post’s title – it’s about the notebooks.

I mean the mystery about the notes I thought I’d taken while watching my play performed, four years ago – and couldn’t find anymore. Or at least, not in the quantity I remember…

Did my storytelling mind make up all the note-taking because it was nice and writerly – the Playwright At Work?

Well, the answer is Yes – and No.

And it went like this: yesterday morning I woke up with a hazy notion that perhaps I had made notes on a printed copy of the play… Continue reading →

Henry James, notebooks, The Spoils of Poynton, writing process

We were speaking of notebooks, remember?

Portrait of Henry JamesWell, Henry James was one compulsive notebooker. He always had one with him, where he noted ideas and interesting conversations, he brainstormed plot and characters and recorded engagements and addresses. Among other things, in one of them is found his solemn decision of giving up playwriting after Guy Domville flopped.

Poor Mr. James… Continue reading →

Time_Notebook_Screenshot_2.480x480-75Oh, the notebook – the vital, lovely, indispensable notebook!

It’s taken me ages to learn to always, but always have one at hand. Ages and endless frustration (and a certain amount of tears) over lost ideas, scraps of descriptions, book references and all sorts of things – things that never became notes, because I didn’t have the means to jot them down at the moment.
